Sook Jung Yun, M.D., Ph.D.

    Dr. Yun is currently an Associate Professor of Department of Dermatology, Chonnam National University Medical School, Gwangju, Korea. She works at Department of Dermatology, Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital which is a cancer center. Dr. Yun graduated from Chonnam National University Medical School in 1997, and completed her PhD at the same University in 2004. She finished residency at Department of Dermatology, Chonnam National University Hospital in 2003. After that, she has worked as fellow, clinical instructor, assistant professor at Department of Dermatology, Chonnam National University Hospital, and now she is an associate professor.

    In 2005, she got medical license of USMLE (ECFMG No.0-599-238-3), and achieved Diplomate, International Board of Dermatopathology in Frankfrut, Germany in 2007. From March, 2008, she studied Dermatopathology for one year at Division of Dermatopathology (Director. Dr. Rosalie Elenitsas), Department of Dermatology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA. During her stay, she studied pathology of melanocytic lesion from Dr. Elder for a few months. Also, in February, 2009, she studied Dermatopathology from Department of Dermatology (Dr. Ronald Rapini), University of Texas, Houston. Dr. Yun spent one year as a visiting associate professor at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at University of Pennsylvania, and focused on Melanoma Pathology, and melanocytic lesions. In addition, she performed experiments about melanoma biology, especially lymphatic vessels.

    Dr. Yun does a research of clinicopathologic and genetic features of Asian melanomas. The most common type of melanoma is acral melanomas which occur on the palms, soles, and nails. Recently, she published those genetic findings on high-quality journals. She have published about 78 papers (research articles and case reports) in Dermatology and Pathology literatures in English, and 110 papers in Korean literatures. Also, she participated the book of “Lever’s histopathology of the Skin, 11th edition” and published “Superficial Melanocytic Pathology” in 2014.

    Dr. Yun takes care of melanoma patients from the first visit to the surgical treatment and follow-ups. She reads histopathologic slides of all skin biopsied patients and melanoma and melanocytic lesions. Dr. Yun also does the surgery of melanoma patients. Therefore, she has a wide range of knowledge from clinical and pathologic experiences. She works as an academic director at Korean society of skin cancer, and member of Korean society of Dermatopathology. Also, she is a member of American Academy of Dermatology, American Society of Dermatopathology, International Society of Dermatopathology, International Melanoma Pathology Study Group, and Society of Melanoma Research.
