Metaplastic synovial cyst

Clinical Features:

  • Arises at sites of trauma, such as surgical scars or following penetrating trauma
  • May communicate with the dermis by way of a fistula tract.

Histologic Features:

  • Dermal pseudocyst lined by polypoid projections closely resembling inflamed synovium
  • The surface of the polypoid projections contains inflammatory cells and a fibrinous exudate, without an epithelial lining.
  • An associated scar is commonly present.
