Mongolian spot

Clinical Features:

  • Pigmented macule, present at birth
  • Usually in the lumbosacral area
  • Most common in darker skinned races
  • Most spontaneously regress by age 3 or 4

Histologic Features:

  • Widely spaced dendritic melanocytes between collagen bundles in the lower reticular dermis
  • The collagen is unaltered, in contrast to blue nevus, in which the dermis is fibrotic.
