Traumatic alopecia

    Clinical Features:

    • Scarring alopecia resulting from compulsive hair pulling (trichotillomania) or from braiding or straightening the hair (traction alopecia)

    Histologic Features:

    • Deformed hair shafts (trichomalacia)
    • Pigmented casts within the hair follicles or empty follicles from the hair shafts being pulled out
    • Usually no or minimal perifollicular inflammation
    • Perifollicular fibrosis 
    • Increased percentage of telogen and catagen follicles
