Course Objectives

The Edinburgh Dermatopathology Tutorial is an annual course designed to provide a practical approach to different topics in Dermatopathology, delivered by extensive self study of a large and varied selection of cases using glass slides. This year’s course aims to increase awareness of the vast spectrum of cutaneous soft tissue tumours. The emphasis will be on diagnostic clues and approach to the diagnosis. Attendees will be provided with individual microscopes and will be able to study 60 selected cases in the context of their clinical histories.  These cases will subsequently be discussed, using live microscopic projection, by our group of internationally renowned tutors. Discussion will be based around the individual diagnosis placed in the broader context of differential diagnosis. In a relaxed atmosphere participants will be encouraged to participate in the discussion and suggest possible diagnoses. To facilitate the discussion, tutors will give 45 minute lectures providing an overview of cutaneous soft tissue tumour pathology based on morphological patterns such as epithelioid, spindle cell and myxoid tumours, in addition to an overview on cutaneous vascular and perivascular neoplasia. Participants will be provided with a course syllabus containing copies of the introductory lectures. At the conclusion of this course participants will have enjoyed a wide range of diagnostic material and will have developed an appreciation for the morphological spectrum of cutaneous soft tissue tumours. In particular, participants will have developed a confident approach to these complex tumours including recognition of more recent entities. Finally, participants will be able to confidently form differential diagnoses and apply clinical history as well as ancillary studies to reach a more definitve diagnosis. The course is suited to Pathologists with an interest in Dermatopathology as well as practising Dermatopathologists and Dermatologists and Pathologists in training preparing for the Diploma in Dermatopathology.
