Society for Hematopathology and European Association for Haematopathology Workshop 2011

October 27-29, 2011 Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A

TOPIC: Cutaneous Lymphomas and Their Mimics

The Society for Hematopathology and European Association for Haematopathology Workshop 2011 (SH/EAHP Workshop 2011) will take place on October 27-29 in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, California.

Topic and Unique Aspect of the Workshop

The topic of the SH/EAHP Workshop 2011 is on "Cutaneous Lymphomas and Their Mimics". A unique aspect of this Workshop is that we anticipate participation of hematopathologists as well as dermatopathologists and dermatologists from around the world.

Cutaneous lymphomas are a common and diagnostically challenging form of non-Hodgkin lymphomas, representing a heterogeneous group of lymphoid malignancies that are characterized by various clinicopathological findings. However, no unifying diagnostic scheme was available until recent release of the EORTC and 2008 WHO classification system, which is intended to offer heuristic guidelines in diagnosis of cutaneous lymphomas.

In practice, characteristics that define malignant cutaneous lymphomas, their various subtypes, plus benign counterparts are not always clear. High complexity, subtlety, as well as ambiguity exist due to overlap of their clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic features. In addition, questions still remain regarding provisional entities in the WHO classification system such as primary cutaneous CD4 positive small/medium T-cell lymphoma.

Therefore, accurate recognition and diagnosis of cutaneous lymphomas present unique and pragmatic difficulties to hematopathologists as well as dermatopathologists, especially considering their critical impacts on patient management.

Objectives

The Workshop will focus on the following overarching goals and objectives:

1. Illustrate overlapping features and diagnostic challenges of malignant vs. reactive lymphoproliferation of the skin, as well as various subtypes of cutaneous lymphomas;
2. Elucidate and expand the diagnostic criteria set by the current WHO/EORTC classification systems;
3. Identify common parameters that can be useful in distinguishing primary vs. secondary cutaneous lymphomas;
4. Develop recommendations in approaches of diagnosing cutaneous lymphomas by clinicopathologic multidisciplinary
