Responsibilities

 
Job Summary

Provides quality patient care and management of all patients and nursing staff for a
specific clinic area. Functions in administrative and/or managerial capacity in clinical
environment

UTILIZES THE NURSING PROCESS AS THE BASIS OF PATIENT CARE
PRACTICE

*Performs and documents assessments of patients as indicated and within
established guidelines

*Implements age appropriate care based on nursing assessment and medical plan of
care

*Provides effective patient/family education based on individualized learning needs to
include discharge instructions

*Provides accurate evaluation of patient response to plan of care as appropriate

MANAGES/COORDINATES THE STAFF AND PROCESSES REQUIRED FOR
DELIVERY OF PATIENT CARE IN A COST EFFECTIVE MANNER

*Effectively coordinates and administers organization personnel policies and
procedures related to selection, orientation, supervision, evaluation/competency
assessment and discharging employees in compliance with State and Federal labor
laws

*Adjusts staffing according to patient census, acuity, level of education and ability of
staff

*Utilizes resources efficiently, effectively and appropriately

*Provides effective leadership in emergency and stressful situations

*Facilitates effective interdisciplinary and interdepartmental communication to assure
delivery of quality patient care across the continuum

RESPONSIBLE FOR EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PERFORMANCE
IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES

*Provides effective training and facilitates learning opportunities for staff

*Facilitates research projects and product evaluation projects in areas as indicated

*Participates in area specific and interdepartmental performance improvement
activities

*Attains required CE for licensure and maintains CPR certification in a timely manner

*Responsible for staff meeting content as appropriate

ANGIO:

PROVIDES LEADERSHIP, DIRECTION, ORGANIZATION AND DAILY
MANAGEMENT IN THE COORDINATION OF THE ACTIVITIES OF A
MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM, INCLUDING CLERICAL AND TECHNICAL
ACTIVITIES

*Coordinates continuing education, in-service education, and new -employee
orientation as needed to satisfy regulatory and developmental requirements

*Diligently monitors and evaluates employee performance to ensure that the highest
quality of services are provided; all S&W policies and procedures are followed,; and
provide continuous and constructive feedback to staff

*Accurately documents employee records in a timely manner, including counseling
situations, absence/tardy occurrences, LOA forms, orientation, etc.

*Prepares schedules, makes job assignments, monitors personnel, and maintains
appropriate personnel and patient records in accordance with established policies and
procedures

*Supervises day to day activities and functions within areas of responsibility in an
effective, timely and professional manner

*Maintains ongoing communication with medical director and department
management

ENSURES THAT THE CALIBER OF SERVICES PROVIDED ARE HIGH IN QUALITY AND EASY TO OBTAIN

*Identifies barriers to patient access to services and develops strategies to address
problems before they occur. Maintains an effective understanding of the processes
used by patients to gain access to services, and finds ways to eliminate barriers. -
telephone responsiveness, courtesy of reception staff, etc.

ESTABLISHES AND MAINTAINS AREA/DIVISION/SECTION PROTOCOLS AND
SAFETY PROCEDURES, OPERATIONAL AND TECHNICAL ISSUES FOR
SERVICES PROVIDED

*Establishes safety procedures/manuals in conjunction with all Federal, State, and
Local guidelines. (e.g. TDH, OSHA, JCAHO, FDA, CMS, etc.)

*Establishes and maintains all technical procedure manuals and operational protocols
as necessary to provide patient care consistent with the mission of Scott and White

PROVIDES INPUT/SUPPORT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND ADHERENCE TO
ESTABLISHED BUDGET. ENSURES AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY FUNCTIONS
WITHIN BUDGETED EXPECTATIONS

*Contributes input into the selection and purchase of capital equipment in a fiscally
responsible and professional manner. Accepts and supports S&W decisions for
vendor selection

*Manages area(s) of responsibility within budget. Minimizes the use of overtime and
other unplanned expenses wherever possible

*Establishes and maintains a cost effective system of inventory control that does not
jeopardize patient care

ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR A QUALITY ENVIRONMENT

*Performs at least 1 quality improvement activity during the year. Results reported to
the Department

*Communicates and works with other areas of the Department as well as with other
areas within Scott and White to ensure that the quality of services provided is
consistent with the mission and goals of Scott and White

*Continuously works with the area/section/division Medical Director and medical staff
to establish and maintain he most current and accurate provision of services

*Ensures that all necessary and required QA/QC activities are performed appropriately
and that all QC/QA equipment is properly maintained in accordance with all Federal,
State, and Local requirements

MAINTAINS A PROGRAM FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF AND STAFF.
PROVIDES AND DEVELOPS AN ATMOSPHERE THAT STIMULATES GOOD
EMPLOYEE MORALE, EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT, AND JOB SATISFACTION

*Takes personal responsibility to understand, complete, and maintain any and all
professional licensure/certifications required of the position and furnishes Scott and
White with the necessary documentation to substantiate compliance

*Reviews with each staff member at least once per year their individual developmental
needs and outlines an educational program for development to address those needs.
Encourages self development

*Takes personal responsibility for professional development and continuing education.
Identifies areas for growth and development to enhance performance of duties and
identifies mechanisms, methodologies, educational programs to meet these needs

*Seeks out opportunities to encourage employees and show a positive attitude on a
daily basis

SUPPORTS THE SCOTT AND WHITE MISSION AND THE GOALS AND
ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

*Performs all position responsibilities and appropriate duties as required in a
competent, professional, and courteous manner

*Responds to requests for involvement in departmental or S&W activities consistent
with level of responsibility

GI:

TIME AND ATTENDANCE RECORD KEEPING

*Will do required Kronos approvals on all direct reports for each pay period

*Will keep up with absences of all direct reports and will do counseling as needed

*Will grant or deny time off to nurses based on staffing needs and other staff being off

*Will grant permission for direct reports to come in late or leave early based on their
reasons

OPEN ACCESS REVIEW

*Will help do open access review based on criteria set up by the GI medical staff

*Reviews will be done in a timely manner - no backlogs over 2 days except weekends
and holidays

*Will review files of reviews that were held for other tests or reports on a weekly basis
to see if they can be processed

*Will correspond with PCPs referring patients for procedures that need some type of
medical clearance first

PHYSICIAN COVERAGE

*Makes sure all physicians have nursing coverage when their assigned nurse is absent

*Resource to LVNs when they are uncertain how to handle a patient or medication issue for their physician

*Works with department secretary to help her with any questions she might have about any patient calls

*Works with insurance companies to help patients get needed treatment or medications if needed

*Calls in prescriptions or makes phone calls to patient at any physician request

SUPERVISION

*Supervises direct reports to be sure they are keeping up with their work. Assigns
others to help as needed

*Ensures that all direct reports have nuring license and CPR certification up dated as needed

*Any needed staff counseling will be reviewed with division Associate Director prior to
counseling

*Encourages teamwork among staff and will participate as a team member by
assisting where needed

*Assists the division in meeting JC compliance, as well as, state board requirements
for licensed staff

ENDOSCOPY:

*Directs staff based on SGNA recommended practices

*Strong knowledge of infection control regarding disinfection of flexible endoscopes
and directs staff accordingly

KNOWLEDGE OF PROCEDURES FOR SPECIALTY AREA

*Thorough knowledge of endoscopic procedures in endoscopy and can act as
resource to staff

*Thorough knowledge of liver biopsy procedure and can act as resource to staff

*Thorough knowledge of abdominal paracentesis and can act as resource to staff

MANAGEMENT

*Takes opportunities to attend educational seminars to enhance management
knowledge

*Manages staff conflicts in a fair and efficient manner

PERFORMS OTHER POSITION APPROPRIATE DUTIES AS REQUIRED IN A
COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS MANNER

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

*Graduate of an accredited RN School of Nursing

*Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the State of Texas or
possesses temporary permit to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas
while awaiting license receipt

*Two years RN experience required - surgical experience in addition to clinical experience
                            required.   Must be able to multi task and handle high volume.

*Three to five years experience preferred

**Previous charge nurse/supervisory experience preferred

Degree: Registered Nurse
License/Certificate: Basic Cardiac Life Support / Registered Nurse
