A submucosal lesion of the tongue

Dr. Ekladous, a 4th year Pathology Resident in Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, is presenting this case.

The patient is an 82-year-old male with a well-circumscribed yellow-tan fatty soft tissue mass in the submucosa of the tongue, measuring 3 mm in greatest dimension. The tumor was surgically excised.

We received a pale tan irregularly-shaped soft tissue fragment from the left side of the tongue measuring 0.7 x 0.6 x 0.2 cm. Upon sectioning, a well-circumscribed yellow-tan fatty mass was noted. Histological sections showed a thinly-encapsulated lesion located in the submucosa, composed of benign mature fat cells. The tumor was completely excised.

    Lipoma in tongue submucosa.
